Victim Support has a dedicated team of highly trained Support Workers deployed to this tragedy. They are on the ground in Whakatane where they are stationed at the emergency headquarters and the welfare centre at Whakatane Library.

We have Support Workers in Tauranga stationed at at the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship where they are supporting families on board, and at Tauranga Hospital where victims are being treated.

Victim Support also has Support Workers at the other hospitals around New Zealand where victims have been transferred.

We will have further Support Workers deployed tomorrow. Our 24-hour contact service is fielding numerous calls from those who witnessed the eruption.

Victims’ and their families’ greatest needs right now are for immediate emotional support and practical help and information, such as which hospital their loved ones are in and help to navigate their way through a foreign country’s systems and processes.

Anyone who needs support can call Victim Support anytime of the day or night on 0800 Victim (0800 842 846).
